2017 Book Haul Post (AKA Failing at NY Resolutions)

There was a time, about six months ago, when I was feeling super optimistic and joined not one, but two reading challenges that consist of reading books you already own instead of buying new ones. I think it’s safe to say I’m failing spectacularly at both of them as I’ve bought nearly 50 books in 2017. Yeah, that’s right. Some sof them were birthday gifts and a lot of them were Kindle deals, so I haven’t beggared our family yet (I’m actually being really good and sticking to my self-allotted book budget). But here are some of the more memorable ones (I might or might not review them at a later date). Links go to reviews if reviews exist!

Bought/Received and Read:

  • The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater – yeah, all four books. So good.
  • The Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima – not as good as the first two but still fairly okay.
  • Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moïra Fowley-Doyle – again, not as good as her first but pretty addictive nonetheless
  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – SUCH a disappointment. :(
  • The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton – I wanted to love this one so much but just didn’t.
  • A Conjuring of Light by Victoria Schwab – reviewed this already.
  • Pretty Face by Lucy Parker – I love this series, it’s such great fun!
  • Walk of Shame by Lauren Layne – this was fantastic. The ending was a bit rushed but still great!
  • City of the Lost and A Darkness Absolute by Kelley Armstrong – WOW this is fantastic! I am totally hooked on this series and if you have more similar recs for me, I need them now.
  • The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – Maraia recommended this after I told her I loved Armstrong’s books and it was so so good!
  • Temptations of a Wallflower by Eva Leigh – this was really good! I don’t read many historicals these days but I like discovering new authors.
  • Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews – I quite enjoyed this! Alpha male warning though.
  • The Day of the Duchess by Sarah MacLean – much anticipated but sadly my least favorite of her books! :( I just couldn’t forgive the hero.
  • Sustained by Emma Chase – this was me giving Chase a second try after pretty much hating her first Royally book, and I didn’t like this one, either. So Chase just isn’t for me, I guess.
  • Haze by Paula Weston – I finally decided to continue this series, and this second part was even better! I’ll have to get the rest soon before I forget too much. Lots of angst.
  • Half of Sarina Bowen’s opus – I’ve been on a serious Bowen binge, she’s one of my favorite new romance discoveries! I even fell in love with sports romance (hockey, woop!).

Honestly, there was a lot more romance. :D

Bought/Received and Waiting to be Read:

  • Landline by Rainbow Rowell – I finally got this to complete my collection (still missing Kindred Spirits though)
  • A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas – I can’t bring myself to start this. I haven’t the energy.
  • Temeraire by Naomi Novik – I said I wouldn’t start this series because it’s so long but then it was a Kindle deal and I kind of had to, after how much I enjoyed Uprooted.
  • Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette-Kowal – this has been on my to-buy list for a long time and then I saw it was less than 4$ and had to pick it up. It came highly recommended + the cover is gorgeous.
  • Finger Lickin’ 15 by Janet Evanovich – I buy one Stephanie Plum book every 6 months or so. I might catch up with the series in a decade or so! :)
  • Leon and Louise by Alex Capus – my mom gave me this one for my birthday, it’s supposed to be really good!

What have you been reading and buying?

Anything I should put on my to-buy list immediately?

I’d love to hear from you! :)

  • Ahh I NEED to buy Strange the Dreamer, I’m not entirely sure why I haven’t yet! I LOVE Laini Taylor’s books!

    • Kaja

Strange the Dreamer is one of the most gorgeous books I own. But as much as I liked her Daughter of S and B series, I just didn’t like this one as much! It was such a disappointment. :(

  • Greg Hill

It’s just too hard not to buy books lol so why try? :) Seriously though looks like some definite good ones there. I agree about City of the Lost- I LOVE that series! Landline (and all the Rainbow Rowell really) are on my TBR also.

    • Kaja

I can’t wait for the third part of the City of the Lost! Do you know, is it a trilogy or will there be more parts? I’m hoping it will evolve into one of those long series.

Rainbow Rowell is hands down one of my favorite authors OF ALL TIME. I can’t even pick which of her books is my favorite. :D

      • Greg Hill

Those books are so good! I think there’s going to be at least 4 City of the Lost books, seems like I saw that on her website not long ago?

        • Kaja

I checked and you’re right! She says at least 4 books. YAY! More Casey! :)

  • I haven’t bought *too* too many books this year, but I’m definitely failing at getting through all the unread books on my shelves. Sorry to hear some of the new books didn’t work out. Let me know if you find a magic motivator for reading the books already on your shelves! ;)

    • Kaja

Nope, no magic motivators here, sorry! :D I’m in a bit of a romance reading slump at the moment, so I’m giving some more literary works on my shelves a try (my mom’s recommendations and such).

  • At least you’ve read a ton of them already! I’m so glad The Naturals is a success so far. :) But I’m disappointed that Spellbook of the Lost and Found wasn’t as good. That’s one of my most-anticipated books!

I haven’t been buying any books, as usual, but I have sooo many library ebooks. It’s actually getting out of control!

    • Kaja

No, Spellbook IS good, just not…as magical as Accident Season. I’ll be very interested in hearing your opinion on it. :)

The Naturals are a definite success but guess what? THE OTHER PARTS OF THE SERIES AREN’T AVAILABLE AS AUDIOBOOKS. And I started the series in audio. GAH. I wanted to use up my credit this month and couldn’t find them. :(

I just started reading a German book, actually (in translation), it’s Leon und Louise in the original. My mom gave me a copy for my birthday, she says it’s really good. Will report! :)

      • Hopefully my library will buy it!

WHAT?! Just the first book? That’s so disappointing! Hmmm. What about an epic fantasy series? Have you already read The Unhewn Throne by Brian Staveley? I’m listening to the third book now and am really loving it. The narrator is fantastic!

I haven’t heard of it before, but I’m looking forward to your final thoughts! What genre is it?

        • Kaja

I already used the Audible credit for Hunted by Meagan Spooner (Hint: DON’T TOUCH THAT. It’s pretty bad.) I saw some rave reviews + it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which are my catnip, but I was really disappointed.

Leon and Louise sounds like your bestselling commercial literary fiction + a bit historical?

          • Haha, I don’t generally like retellings, especially of Beauty and the Beast, so I would never have read it. But I’m sorry you were disappointed!

  • I have miserably failed at anything and everything book related this year. I don’t know what it is I just can’t focus long enough to read books at the moment but I hope it’s just a phase that ends pretty soon.

    • Kaja

I’m sorry you’re in a reading rut. I’m still reading a lot, but not the books I set out to read at the start of the year. And blogging got pushed to the sidelines. Sometimes, life’s just like that. I hope your slump ends soon!

  • Please, my bookish purchases are like triple yours so far this year. Sure, I’m not providing for young kids so I don’t feel too bad but still you should feel pleased. And there are a lot of good books on here. I want to hear your thoughts on Landline once you read because I saw some folks didn’t like it but I read it in one sitting and loved it. Also, I will send you a copy of Kindred Spirits. I mean, how expensive can it be? I feel bad that it’s missing from your collection, everyone deserves a complete Rainbow Rowell collection.

And you read Burn For Me! Trust me, it gets better in the second book. Rogan is still all alpha male but he gets some backstory to explain his behaviour so that definitely helps. And the Rephaim series! Yay! I love those books, I want to know all your thoughts, they are amazing and addictive and I am seriously hoping I can get an overpriced Aus copy of her next book because it’s got no UK publication date yet. I wish I had some recs for books like City of the Lost and A Darkness Absolute but those books seem like original reads but if you get good recs send me a list and I’ll check them out too.

I have bought a whole heap of books recently, have you read Alex, Approximately? I’ve just finished and really loved that, it was such a cute summer YA and it made me happy. I’ve also bought The Hate You Give because I was watching a programme about the rise in racist hate groups in the US since Trump was elected and it felt appropriate to pick it up. Also, it was on sale. That’s all I can think of right now but really, my SUnday posts always have my latest books.

    • Kaja

Oh you’d really do that? Send the Rowell book? I can wire you the money for the book + the postage via paypal if you want. (I guess postage can get expensive? I have no idea how it is in the UK. Here, if you send it as “ordinary”, it’s quite cheap.)

And I’m glad Rogan’s alpha tendencies are explained. I’ll be reading the rest of the series, never fear. :)

YEAH the Rephaim are swoony. I thought I was over YA paranormals with love triangles but APPARENTLY NOT. Maybe I’ll never grow out of them. :D

Well Maraia recommended The Naturals series, that was addictive! I listened to the first book on audio, only to discover the other books in the series weren’t available as audiobooks. I’ll definitely be reading the rest, though.

      • I totally would it’s me little book and it’s the last book for your set. Don’t worry about it the book is £1 and the postage shouldn’t be too bad I’ll have to check but I think I can cover it. I’ll email you about it!

Yeah, the second book definitely gives you the well needed back story and really gets better.

I know exactly what you mean. The Rephaim series seems to take those things I thought I was over in paranormal YA and make me love it again. That is a skill.

I’ve looked at The Naturals and it sounds awesome. I’ll be adding to my buy list. It’s typical that the rest of the books aren’t available as audio books, I hate getting books in different formats in a series.

        • Kaja

Getting books in different formats is the worst. I’m not particular if I have 1 in hardback and the others in paperback, for example, but I always either buy e-books OR audio OR paper. This will be weird, I don’t even know how the character’s names are spelled.

  • I have read and bought A Conjuring of Light, Our Dark Duet, and Sofia Khan is Not Obliged! I’m currently reading The Lady Midnight series and I highly recommend it! :D

    Rachana @ Spun

    • Kaja

Thanks for that rec! I’ve heard of The Lady Midnight series, it comes highly recommended & it’s on my to-buy list. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  • Pshaw on Resolutions! I think all of these are very wise decisions and resolutions are made to be broken:). I’m bummed to hear that Sarah MacLean’s newest one was a let down!

    • Kaja

Yeah, I’m giving up on resolutions pretty early this year. :D oops!

Have you read the latest MacLean? The main conflict (aka second chance romance with the duke who CHEATED ON HIS WIFE IN PUBLIC) just wasn’t for me. Other than that, it’s your typical MacLean book, wonderful pacing, very readable. But that plotline wasn’t made for me.

  • I’m really looking forward to Spellbook of the Lost and Found. I will go in not expecting it to be just as amazing as The Accident Season. I’m so glad you enjoyed The Naturals! I really love that series as well. I have the final book on my shelf, but I don’t want it to end! Good luck with your challenges for the second half of the year :)

  • MoonstoneBooks

I love cover of Strange the Dreamer! I’ve heard such mixed things about it though :/ I think I’m still going to try and give it a shot.
